Joe Biere de Garde

Come one, come all to JT Whitney's to try a *fantastic new beer on tap. Recipe written by and brewed by the best new brewer in the business: Mr. Joe Walts!

His new beer is a "Winter Biere de Garde"--a dark, strong beer made in the tradition of French farmhouse ales.

*Disclaimer: I'm sure it is wonderful, although I haven't actually had a chance to try it yet. Drinking on the job at the hospital or right before work is frowned upon. Unfortunately, it's only available if you visit the brewpub. However, if you've been a good little Michigander (or friend or family member of one), you just may get to try some over the holiday.

That shit at the bottom of your glass is yeast that has fallen out of grace (or suspension, depending on your right vs. left brain function). The beer is still fermenting because 1) the city's water problems prevented us from properly boosting our yeast population and 2) we wouldn't be able to let the beer ferment long enough and still have it available for the holidays. Right now, it's 7% abv and still increasing! It'll theoretically be less hazy in a week or two, but it'll be gone by then so get to the bar and drink up! All of the non-ideal conditions that the beer has endured simply bring its rustic heritage to the forefront, or something.

Update: I was able to do a taste test several hours before going to work. This beer has my stamp of approval. It didn't come out exactly as he had planned, but it still turned out to be an excellent batch of beer. Great aroma and flavor.

Just stopped at our neighborhood brew pub for lunch. We were able to sample their new holiday brew - Biere de Garde. Dark and flavorful. Especially good since I like malt over hops. My date says she "really enjoyed it" as well.

The helpful assistant brewer kindly gave us a close-up tour of the brewery. Of course once in the brewing area, everything is close-up.

We share the recommendation to stop on in put forward by the other impartial commenters on this page.
